Need more time in China? Here's your practical guide to extending your visa.
Who Can Extend?
Most tourists can extend their L visa once, for up to 30 days. Business (M), work (Z), and student (X) visa holders should contact their sponsoring organization.
Where to Go
Visit the local Exit-Entry Administration Bureau (出入境管理处). Major cities have dedicated visa offices:
- Beijing: Gongti North Road, Chaoyang District
- Shanghai: Minsheng Road, Pudong
- Guangzhou: Jiefang South Road
Required Documents
- Valid passport with current visa
- Registration form (available on-site)
- Passport photo (bring extras)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or rental contract)
- Extension fee (160 RMB for most nationalities)
Timing
Apply 7-10 days before your visa expires. Processing takes 5-7 working days. You'll keep your passport during this time.
Pro Tips
- Go early in the morning to avoid queues
- Bring Chinese-speaking friend if possible
- Have photocopies of all documents ready
- Cash payment only in some offices
Important Note
Overstaying is serious—you'll face fines (500-2000 RMB/day) and possible deportation. Plan ahead!
Good luck with your extension! 🇨🇳
